Traffic signs, road striping, and markings play vital roles in transportation safety both through the coordination of safe driving practices and by alerting drivers of potential hazards. Many accidents can be traced to the failure of drivers to heed these vital aids.
It is the role of the transportation engineer to be aware of how signs and striping can reduce accidents and increase traffic safety. In the Road Design Lab of this module we will let you look at several stretches of road and determine which striping provides the safest conditions.
But before we do, take a look at the photos to the left. Try to get an idea of what might have caused each accident and how signs and striping might have kept them from happening.
