Today's transportation systems depend on technology to move both materials and people around the globe in a safe, efficient, and productive manner. Many societal advances are directly related to advances in transportation. For example, the shipping industry is able to bring goods from all over the world to our ports where the trucking and rail industries take over to deliver them to every city and town in the country, making it possible for us to enjoy things that were once unheard of. And, the airline industry has made it possible for us to travel to far and exotic places for both business and pleasure and return in a very short period of time.
While the transportation technology of the past iinvolved horse drawn carriages, bicycles, and just plain walking, today's technology is jet engines, diesels, and automotive computer chips. And, even though we consider today's technology to be cutting edge, thousands of people are working to improve our transportation technology. Efforts are being made everyday to determine more efficient transportation routes, more economical automotive engines, and safer passenger vehicles.
Who knows where tomorrow's transportation systems will take us. Perhaps rocket ships will take us to other worlds or transporter systems will move us around the globe in a manner of seconds. But what we do know is that as long as people can dream of far off places, someone will develop a transportation system that will get us there.
