If you ask each of your
classmates the question "What is Transportation?" you will, more than likely, get a
different answer from each of them. There are primarily two reasons for this:
- To the average person, transportation is transparent. It's there, it's
always been there, and there is no reason to believe that it's not always
going to be here. This is because the hundreds of thousands of people who work
behind the scenes to make America's transportation system successful are very
good at their jobs. Its through their efforts that people are able to get in
their cars to drive to work, go to school, go to the store, go to the movies,
take a vacation, or go to the hospital, all within a reasonable amount of
time.
- Transportation is a very big field. It has many specialized areas.
Trucking, railroads, airlines, shipping, and road construction are just a few
of these areas.
In this module, we will help you define
Transportation by examining the various components that cause it to impact
our daily lives. We will look at transportation from the air, sea, rail
and highway. Then we'll look at how all of these forms of transportation,
and the people who make them work, come together to safely move people and
products across the world in a manner that improves all of our daily lives.
